Frequently Asked Questions

Here, I'll post the answers to some of my most frequently asked questions. As always, feel free to email me at CleverCatTutoring@gmail.com if you have something that hasn't been answered here.

Policies

What if it doesn't work out?

Don't fret!  I have a "no worries guarantee."  No payment is required prior to your first session.  If, after the first hour, you don't think I'm a "good fit," you can walk away then worry-free.  Payment will only be required after completion of the first session.

What is your cancellation policy?

You can view my cancellation policy by going to the page titled "Files" and clicking the heading link titled "Cancellation Policy."  If you have an questions, feel free to contact me!

Payment

How Do I Pay You?

I prefer cash or a credit card, but I will take a check with a valid phone number, NCDL number, and address.  Checks are deposited either same day or the following day.  I have a $25 fee for returned checks.

You can also pre-pay credit (and receive a discount on your rate in the process!).

How do you determine the rate I'll pay?

Your rate is determined based on the number of lessons I anticipate you needing, the amount of preparation required for me, and the complexity of the subject material.  Generally, higher level courses will require more sessions, more time, and be more complex.  I will talk with you beforehand and determine your rate from our initial "interview."

About Your Session

What Should I Bring To My Session?

Good question!  For your first session, you should make sure to bring with you the following:

  • Pen/pencil

  • Paper

  • Graphing Calculator/Calculator (for math)

  • Textbook

  • Syllabus/Course Schedule (if you have one)

  • Notes From Class

  • Any Homework Assigned

  • Any Previous Tests/Exams

For future sessions, I will advise you on what to bring.  In general, be sure to bring with you:

  • Pen/Pencil

  • Paper

  • Graphing Calculator/Calculator (math)

  • Textbook

  • Any Homework Assigned/Exams Returned

  • Notes From Class

What do I need to know about my first session?

During your first session, we'll start off with some basic housekeeping - policies, expectations, the boring stuff.  This is also where I'll begin figuring out where you're at academically, what you're having trouble with (in general), where we need to go, and what we need to do.  (Don't worry, there are no tests to take, nothing to fill out, nothing like that.)  This is also something I will be doing constantly throughout our sessions as I re-evaluate where we're at and where we need to go.

After we've finished the housekeeping, we'll dive into the subject material for the remaining time.

Sometimes the first session goes a little over (or starts a little earlier than) the scheduled time because of everything packed into it.  This is because, while we need to do the housekeeping to get established, I still want to give you as much instruction and assistance as possible because that's what you're here for.  Our other sessions will typically start and end on time.

ALSO: You have the right to be accompanied to your sessions (any session, not just the first) by someone (best friend, parent/guardian, brother/sister, significant other, etc), provided that this person isn't a distraction to you or me.  You also have the right to meet in a public place if you choose.  Typically, for the first session or two (especially if I am going to someone's house), I will bring someone along with me just out of caution.  I highly recommend, at least for the first session, that minors are accompanied by a parent/guardian.

What is the most important thing for me to know about my first session?

Relax!  You're here to learn and I'm there to help you!

Don't be afraid to ask questions at any time during your session. (Even if I'm about to change topics or say something). Just remember: The only stupid question is the question not asked!

And, if there's ever anything I can do to help you learn better, let me know!

I have a question! How can I contact you?

You can reach me at the following numbers --

Home: 704-278-9578

Cell: 704-640-2415

Please be advised that my cell phone does not always work at home.  So, if you call me on it while I'm home, you will probably get a call back on the house phone.

Txting: I have unlimited txts, so feel free to txt away.  Sometimes this is actually the better way to reach me.

About Me

So, how do I know you're a legitimate tutor and not some creepy dude living in your Mum's basement?

I am happy to provide you with a copy of my high school and college transcripts (unofficial, of course) to verify that I have taken courses at or above the courses I claim competency in.  Further, I am also a tutor on WyzAnt.com.  (You can view my profile here:  ANOTutoring).  I have consented to a background check on WyzAnt and will happily consent to one for you (at your expense, of course).

I am also a Boy Scout Assistant Scoutmaster as well as an Associate Advisor of a Venture Crew (and have worked with the Boy Scouts in some capacity for 10+ years).  I subscribe to the principles of "two-deep leadership" for my sessions, especially for minors.  Meaning, you are ALWAYS welcome to have someone accompany you to your lessons and sit through (provided they aren't a distraction to you or me), just as you might see me bring someone along too.  This is for your protection as well as mine.  All initial sessions are conducted at a public location and subsequent sessions are as well (unless agreed upon in advance by both parties).  I restate, you ALWAYS have the RIGHT to have someone accompany you in your lessons (and I encourage this if the tutee is a minor).

I have also been background checked by an independent agency for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte's Pathway to Teaching Programme.  I can assure you that I am thoroughly checked in every aspect of my life.  However, if you would like, I am willing to submit to a background check for your peace of mind.  :)

What do you do when you aren't tutoring?

Whenever I'm not at work, I can usually be found curled up with my Kindle reading a good book, playing with my furbabies (I have 2 cats - 14 years old and 2 years old), or outside working in my family's garden or exploring the outdoors.  I like to spend my evenings taking walks with my boyfriend and the family dog or talking with family.

General Questions

What is an "adequate" amount of time for a session?

I have found that, typically, an hour is the minimum for a session.  It lets everyone get settled, relaxed, and into the work without being terribly overwhelming.  Personally, I prefer an hour and a half because, in my experience, an hour is too short.  Rarely will I have a session that is more than 2 hours.

In the event of a multi-hour session, we will take a short (5-10 minute) break after the first hour or hour and a half and each period after.
