About April
I am a certified CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) tutor who has spent the past 2 years tutoring mathematics (general math through pre-calculus), psychology (introductory psychology, abnormal psychology, behaviour modification), and Japanese (all levels) at the college level, typically 16 hours a week. In a typical semester I tutored 30+ students a week over a variety of subjects, with most of my sessions being full (capped at 3 students/session). Currently I am also a math and science tutor at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College as well as a private tutor in the surrounding area.
I attended the NC School of Science & Mathematics for high school and graduated in December 2012 from Appalachian State University with a degree in Technical Photography, minoring in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). As of Fall 2014 I will be studying at UNC-Charlotte for my Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Math Ed.
While most of my experience tutoring is with college aged students, I am also quite at ease working with elementary through high school students. I have been involved with the Boy Scouts of America for the past 10 years and have spent the past 4 as an Assistant Scoutmaster and Associate Crew Advisor for my troop/crew. Before that, I volunteered to be an Assistant Leader with my local cub scout camp as well as assisted my local cub pack and Boy Scout troop (moving with my younger brother as he aged through the ranks). I frequently help the boys in my troop with their homework, so I am very familiar with primary and secondary school education and at ease helping youth.
In my spare time, I can typically be found outside - often underwater scuba diving, hiking through the mountains of North Carolina, or hanging off of a rock somewhere - or curled up with a good book and my two fur children (cats named Mistoffelees and Tala). I am also an avid photographer who shoots professionally. The image to the left was taken while working at the Boy Scouts of America (BSA)'s National High Adventure Florida Sea Base in Islamorada, Florida in 2010.
